WELCOME TO ROOM 1 NEW ENTRANTS!

Room 1 has New Entrant and Year 1 students.  We work closely with  families, Early Childhood Centres and Kindergartens to ensure your child’s transition to school is as smooth and positive as possible.  Our classroom is child centred and we promote a positive learning environment where children and their families feel welcome and comfortable.  Learning through play is an important part of our programme and the children have daily opportunities to play within the classroom environment.  We also have the sandpit and playground right outside our classroom, so the children can choose outside activities during this time also.

Our focus is the key competencies of the New Zealand Curriculum:

  • self managing

  • relating to others

  • participating and contributing

  • thinking skills

  • language, symbols and text

We  have a strong literacy programme based on current best practice and the science of reading. We follow a structured literacy approach with an explicit approach to teaching literacy and a clear scope and sequence. We are proud of the gains we can see our students making in literacy, following this approach.

The children have daily maths and number activities and we use materials to develop mathematical concepts.

We run a motor skills programme where small groups of students work with a teacher, Mrs Siegert, to develop their fine and gross motor skills and develop their upper body strength to assist with their fine motor skills.

We have Kelly Birchall, our wonderful teacher aide in Room 1, to support the children with their social and emotional needs and to work with small groups of students.

We prioritise the child’s well being and development of their social and emotional skills while having fun in a calm, caring, positive environment.  We believe relationships are key and work hard to develop strong, caring relationships with students and their families.
